Readings: - Selected passages from Beowulf - “The Dream of the Rood”. - A selection of Middle English Lyrics. - “Preface” to Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. - Fragments from Everyman. - A selection of sonnets by Sidney, Spenser and Shakespeare. - William Shakespeare, Hamlet. - A selection of poems by John Donne and Andrew Marvell. - A selection of entries from Samuel Pepys’s Diary. A booklet with the selected readings will be provided at the beginning of the course, with the exception of Shakespeare's play. Students will need to get their own copy of Hamlet, in its original, unabridged, English version. Any edition by a major publishing house such as Oxford University Press, Penguin or Longman, among others, is acceptable. |
