1. Concepts
1.1 What is literature? And English literature? 1.2 What is literary theory and what is it for? 1.3 Writers and critics: who does a text belong to? 1.4 Validation: the literary canon. 1.5 Mediation agents (publicity, translators, audiences, film makers, critics, scholars). 1.6 Centre and periphery: standards and alternatives. 1.7 A brief history of literary criticism: from Matthew Arnold, the Cambridge critics and the New Critics to ecocriticism.
2. Text, author and reader, and the process of communication 2.1 Meaning and significance (Hirsch)
2.2 Objectivity and subjectivity. Authorial intention and reception. The author is dead?
2.3 Open and closed.
2.4 Sources related: I. A Richards and close reading. Hirsch. Roland Barthes' evolution. Umberto Eco's "lectore". Iser reading English novels (Joseph Andrews, etc). Wayne C. Booth's views of irony and "pluralism". Stanley Fish and creative reception/interpretation.
