General description The economic development of the relevant social context is in the background of any social phenomenon. A key aspect of that economic development is the level of personal income. Therefore, social change, the dynamics of values and social roles, the characteristics of organizations and institutions, or the social demands and problems, are mediated by economic growth. Furthermore, the concepts of economic growth theory are useful for understanding many social and economic phenomena: types of tangible and intangible goods, diminishing factor returns, increasing returns to scale, private incentives for innovation, reasons for public intervention... This course consolidates and broadens the study of Economics begun in the subject of Political Economy in the first year of the Degree in Sociology. Emphasis will be placed on handling concepts and statistics to assess economic dynamics, especially long-term growth. The course is a good complement to the professional culture of sociologists and to other optional subjects or to End of Degree Projects (TFGs) related to globalization, environmental sustainability, migration, demography, knowledge, social change, social movements, public policies or methodological issues. It is specially designed, however, to "learn to think" in terms of mental models and incentive mechanisms.
