General description Chemistry is a discipline that is responsible for studying matter, its properties, transformations and its interaction with electromagnetic radiation and, this study, involves being able to describe the behavior of the basic elements that constitute matter (electrons and atomic nuclei), that is, the knowledge of matter at the microscopic level. And it is what we will dedicate ourselves to in this subject, to study the laws of mechanics that allow us to explain the behavior of microscopic particles, since they do not obey the laws of classical physics but the unintuitive quantum mechanics. It is essential to know how to rigorously apply its principles to derive the laws that govern matter, its structure, the types of bonds and its transformations, and to see how they have important consequences at the macroscopic level. Once we know the basics of quantum mechanics, we will introduce the foundations of statistical mechanics that serves as a bridge to calculate the macroscopic properties of matter using quantum mechanics. All the concepts of these new mechanics will be applied to simulate and analyze the properties of matter at the nanoscopic scale.
